Artificial Intelligence: AI

Artificial Intelligence: AI   Artificial Intelligence is a wonderful tool when used appropriately.   AI can save literally hundreds of hours for research in various fields: STEM, medicine, finance, economics and so on.   However, AI must be programmed.   And by whom?   The programming of AI may be skewed to benefit certain groups.   Why?   Because it can be.   Most recently a platform has been created to write numerous essays, reports, presentations and so on.   On one hand, this program ChatGPT holds much benefit for those professionals who must get reports out quickly.   On the other hand, ChatGPT is also being used as a student resource for easy-essay generation.   Plug in the assigned prompt and in seconds out comes the assignment!   Here are some considerations for using AI as a substitute for student learning: Why should kids go to school at all if students will address assignments by pre-programmed material? Why should teachers assign essays

Seniors & College

After a few months, Writing Scoop has resumed its posting.  Much has happened during our time away, but much has remained the same!  We hope ALL are WELL & SAFE! Here are some timely tips: If you are a high school senior applying to college for Fall 2021 or a junior thinking in advance- 1. Prepare a college list. How many colleges?  1 is risky, but 25 may be excessive.  Try several safe colleges, some target schools and maybe a reach or 2.  2. What is the most important feature or a college? Location. location, location!  Unless you are applying to a highly specialized major (architecture, engineering, business, fashion design), many colleges have similar courses.  Think of where you would like to be ! Next consider cost, population, size, Rah-Rah and friends who will be applying to the same colleges. 3. Create a Common Application account.  Write your user name and password somewhere! 4. If applicable, link your Common App to your school so that recommendations and transcripts can

Writing Scoop: Poetry by Gabriela Mistral

Gabriela Mistral  ( Lucila Godoy Alcayaga 1889-1957) was a poet, diplomat and humanitarian from Chile.  In 1945 she became the first South American poet to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.  Mistral's poems are lyrical and intense with emotion.  Here is a poem the famous Harlem Renaissance Poet Langston Hughes translated to English from Mistral's native Spanish:  COUNTRY THAT IS MISSING Gabriela Mistral translated by Langston Hughes Country that is missing, strange country, lighter than angel and nebulous password, color of dead algae, color of mist, ageless as time lacking ageless bliss. No pomegranates spring or jasmines blow, it has neither skies nor seas of indigo. Your name is a name never heard called have I, and in country with no name I am going to die. Neither bridge nor boat brought me hither. Nobody told me it was island or shore. I did not seek or discover it either. It seems like a fable now that I've learned it, dreaming to

Writing Scoop: May 12 -National Limerick Day!

Image
Today IS National Limerick Day: May 12! A limerick is a type of poem that is usually funny.  It has 5 lines and is predominantly anapestic meter, having a disciplined rhyme of AABBA.  The 1st, 2nd & 5th line rhyme and the 3rd & 4th lines are shorter and have their own rhyme. It is thought that the poem type, limerick, derived its name from County Limerick in Ireland, where perhaps the first limericks originated. Here are 2 limericks for your enjoyment: There was a young rustic named Mallory, who drew but a very small salary. When he went to the show, his purse made him go to a seat in the uppermost gallery. The British wordplay and recreational mathematics expert Leigh Mercer (1893–1977) devised the following mathematical limerick: 12 + 144 + 20 + 3 4

Writing Scoop: Happy Mothers Day!

My Mother's Garden Anonymous My Mother kept a garden, a garden of the heart, She planted all the good things that gave my life it's start. She turned me to the sunshine and encouraged me to dream, Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem... And when the winds and rain came, she protected me enough- But not too much because she knew I'd need to stand up strong and tough. Her constant good example always taught me right from wrong- Markers for my pathway that will last a lifetime long. I am my Mother's garden. I am her legacy- And I hope today she feels the love reflected back from me.
